The 12th Mountain Lake Colloquium was held May 19th-22nd, 2013, at the Mountain Lake Hotel in Pembroke, Virginia.  In keeping with this year’s theme, “The Art of Revision,” we were delighted to welcome as keynote speakers Dr. Gloria Ladson-Billings, Keller Family Chair in Urban Education and Professor of Curriculum and Instruction and Policy Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Dr. Ysaye Barnwell, renowned educator, author, and singer with SWEET HONEY IN THE ROCK®.   What a gift to have both Ysaye Barnwell and Gloria Ladson-Billings with us this year. Together, they brought a dynamic synergy of music and scholarship to our mountain top experience that will resonate in our minds and ears in the coming months.

Colloquium conversations revolved around themes of re-visioning and re-inventing our music teacher education practices and perspectives, culturally relevant pedagogy, and building community through music. The variety and quality of sessions was just what we needed to “extend our conversation” each day and send us off with ideas for revising our work.
